50 Mildly Interesting Experiences Tourists Had While Visiting Other Countries (New Pics)
Interview With ExpertThere is almost nothing in life that impacts us quite like travel. It’s not just about good food and guided tours (though they're awesome, too!)—it’s about adventure, self-discovery, and broadening our perceptual horizons. Travel reveals who we really are. The more curious you are, the more you can get out of each trip.
Our team here at Bored Panda has curated a list of photos from all around the world in which tourists share some of their most surprising discoveries. It shows how much beauty and strangeness you can experience when you keep your eyes open and your camera by your side!
Bored Panda wanted to find out what can help people step out of their comfort zones and travel more, so we reached out to Keith O’Hara from The Irish Road Trip. The travel writer was kind enough to share his insights with us. You'll find our full interview with him as you read on.

A Clever Way To Show How Ancient Ruins Looked Like
Love this, it's explaining what the place looked like, rather than just a pile of stones!
I'm not sure you have. You'll get to see in Greece the sketches on a sign near the exhibit but you won't see them through a pane of glass with the black lines filling out the blanks/the remaining part of the structure like pictured here
Load More Replies...This is the so called "Heidentor" in Austria. It's a gate built in the 4th century and is located near the the ancient roman city of Carnuntum. Should you be in the area, you need to visit! The open air museum of Carnuntum is very impressive. They have authentically rebuilt multiple roman buildings including a fully functional roman bathhouse. You won't get a better view into the roman lifestyle than in Carnuntum!
We have this place in the Netherlands called the Luchtkasteel. Literally "the air castle". It's a field where the castle used to be and a frame you can look through to see what it looked like. It's pretty cool. They also have these signs for places Vincent Van Gogh painted to show the aspect of the painting.
I think I should prefer a castle made of stone, wood, or even drywall to a castle made of air.
Load More Replies...L.A. Harbor (Terminal Island) has a similar one with an etched glass panel showing what the old Japanese fishing village looked like before it was raided and then razed after Pearl Harbor. It's a perfect way to honor the gone past.
They need this in Vegas - the place changes on a daily basis and some of the classic casinos are gone.
There’s a dilemma that many people face. On the one hand, they say that they want to travel. On the other hand, they’re either too scared to face discomfort, or they think that they’re ‘too busy’ to go on trips. Bored Panda asked O’Hara, the founder of The Irish Road Trip project, for his take on solving the issue.
“Being ‘too busy’ is never an excuse to put off enjoying life, yet it’s a trap many of us plummet head-first into, whether it be due to financial or work commitments. Often, you just need to start small,” O’Hara told us via email that an incremental approach can help here.
“For example, let’s say your main travel goal is to get to Ireland’s Ring of Kerry at some point. Set that as your ‘North Star’—the main travel ‘goal’ you work towards. A future ’travel-to-do.’”

O’Hara elaborated further: “In the meantime, make a plan for more realistic travel destinations that you can get to in the short term, within your time/financial constraints. You’ll (hopefully) start to see the benefits of these ‘baby-step’ trips. Then, when the time is right, make that ‘main’ trip.”
The travel writer shared a few thoughts on leaving the comfort zone, too. “When I was in my mid-20s, many of my friends were in long-term relationships. I went from having a group that I could travel with often to a group of friends who holidayed with their partners. I found the concept of traveling on my own daunting,” the founder of The Irish Road Trip opened up to Bored Panda.
“It wasn’t until I decided to take a winter trip one weekend to the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry that I realized traveling solo was actually OK. Yes, it meant overcoming the awkwardness of sitting in a restaurant solo but being able to see/do what I wanted when I wanted was a weird yet enjoyable novelty. Solo travel can be intimidating, but ask yourself, ‘What’s the worst that can happen?’ Worst case scenario—you lose money.”

Bored Panda was also curious about the type of attitude that it’s best to adopt when traveling abroad. “Be enthusiastic, but be educated about your destination,” O’Hara suggested.
“Understand, at least at a very high level, the ins and outs of where you’re traveling to and take time to understand any dos and don’ts,” he said that many people visiting Ireland may not understand the nuances between the country and Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, talking politics in a bar in Ireland can also be risky if you’re not familiar with things.
“For the most part, just embrace it all—one of the joys of travel is experiencing people, places, food, language, and culture. Soak it all up.”
"Complimentary Sticks" For Dogs In A Posh Part Of London
My local dog park in Queensland Australia has a 'stick library' and a 'tennis ball library' which regular park users contribute to.
That's. A great idea. Also should be compostable bags for the poo in case you run out
Someone in my neighborhood has a Little Free Library for people and a Little Free Stick library for dogs. "Take a stick. Leave a stick." Our Roxanne doesn't quite get the "leave a stick" part.
Traveling Through Some Back Roads In My College Town And Came Across This. The Generosity Made My Day
In America, I've seen this same thing. The scissors stay. Some have a jar for people to donate what they want, and the money has stayed there. America is a big place and it's not all the same.
In America, that sign was put there by the neighbor across the street that can't see the view
A few years ago me and my gf were traveling thru Amish country in Pennsylvania and stopped a fresh veggie stand. No one there but had a locked box where you could put money in and take the veggies of your choice. Never saw that before or after.
We had a house in Tukwila, WA with a bus stop right in front (handy when you have teenagers). There was a large patch of dirt between our fence and the sidewalk, about 6' x 18', so I densely planted wildflowers. I made a wooden sign that said "Please pick the flowers, but don't be greedy". I saw one little neighbor boy, I'm talking like 5, out there trying to pick some Bachelor Buttons, but they have really tough stems. I came out with some scissors and asked if he'd like some help. He shyly asked if it was okay to make a bookate (his word) for his Mom because it was her birthday. We picked a lovely "bookate" and I even tied some ribbon around the stems, I knew he only lived about 5 houses away, but wasn't too trusting of a 5 year old with a glass container. His Mom came by a few hours later to thank me. Turns out the kid was on the spectrum and this was a HUGE deal for both of them. It takes so little to be kind, folks. Let's all try to remember that.
My Country Puts Phosphor Into Sidewalks So You Can See At Night
We firmly believe that everyone can—and should—embrace travel as a way of life. No matter your circumstances, you should strive to step outside your comfort zone. Even if just a little bit.
Though routines are useful to have, eventually, they can lead to a very monotonous existence. It’s hard to find much joy in life if all you ever do is work, eat, sleep, and do chores. All the while dealing with burnout, exhaustion, or anxiety. Every day feels more or less the same. However, when we kindle the spark of curiosity inside of us, we see what else life has to offer. We’re suddenly reenergized.
The importance of cultivating curiosity applies to every area of your life. It adds a dash of energy to your relationships, your jobs, and yes—how you perceive the world. If all you ever do is what you’ve always done, then barring some major external events, you’ll see life the same as you always have. When we introduce something new into our lives, everything starts to shift and change.
A Resort I’m At Has A Sign To Warn Tourists About Seals Sleeping On The Beach
I think a better sign would be just one with a list of the extensive antimicrobial testing and prophylaxis protocol we have to give patients bitten by seals - yes, they will bite if you bother them, and they have a tendency to carry a fun range of primarily aquatic germs that can do a lot of damage potentially.

Reading a new book from a genre you’d never touch. Going back home by a different route. Meeting new people. Taking your partner on a date after a long while. Saying ‘yes’ to that impulsive desire to ‘go somewhere’ this weekend instead of being a Netflix couch potato again.
It’s these things that add spice to our lives. Routine, stability, and predictability are fine. But that’s just one side of the coin that is life. The other side is all about embracing the surprises and opportunities that come our way.
What matters far more than where you travel and what hotel you stay in is that you’re open to welcoming the idea of adventure. You’re willingly adding some discomfort and unpredictability into your life because you’re yearning for something new.

Park In Singapore Has A Swing For People In Wheelchairs So That They Can Experience It Too
a number of parks in NYC have this, including our famous "Playground for All Children" https://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/flushing-meadows-corona-park/highlights/12639
There is an entire "all inclusive" theme park a few towns over from where we are currently living in the US called Morgan's Wonderland. It was conceived by a man whose daughter had special needs. There's a waterpark with wheelchair accessible pools (you can even get waterproof wheelchairs), there's a sensory place, fun "offroad" vehicle track that is for kids (also the cars have wheelchair access), fishing, playgrounds, a theatre where they put on plays, music garden, loads of other things as well. I've only been once, for a philanthropist day thing, but it was a lot of fun. Unfortunately not free because it's a privately owned theme park that is big and expensive to maintain to make sure everyone is safe, but we try to donate a day at the park to as many special needs classes as we can.
Yes, many places have them, they are usually called Liberty swings. I have photos of my brother using one as early as 2004, so I'm surprised they aren't everywhere. I think often it is Lion's Club or Rotary who pay for the cost of them to be installed.
Load More Replies...They don't. But many people in wheelchairs have someone with them, or they could even ask a random stranger to give them a push...
The chain looks like it's there for someone to be able to use it themselves
Load More Replies...Maybe i am stupid, but how do they start to swing by themself? I mean, legs are not working.....
Dumb question, but how does it work? Does someone push you or is it more like those zipline ones? (I see rope, but what's it for?)
The ones my brothers have used, either someone pushes them or some have an electronic switch to start and stop it, but those ones usually have a fence around them and you have to get the key from the park office to use it.

I need this in my neighborhood and the baguette vending machine right next to it!
I love the very large portions down the machine. Buying half a wheel of cheese for one's private consumption must be fun.
Travel is a great way to get to see your life, values, and problems from a different perspective.
Your trips do not have to have to cost you an arm and a leg. Travel is perfectly possible on any budget. However, you do have to be realistic about your current limits, as well as those of your wallet. You shouldn’t be forcing yourself to travel first class and stay at five-star luxury hotels if all of your friends do that. Think about what you want, what you’re comfortable with, what you can afford. You shouldn’t travel to impress others (even if sharing a few photos is always fun!).

This McDonald's Sign Has Been Made To Match The Old Street That It Is On - Salzburg, Austria
It's near Mozart's birthplace. At least the city authorities are keen on preserving the look of their historic streets.
Ditto in Vannes, in the SE of Bretagne, France. Several buildings under reconstruction, but takes much longer, as they are obliged by law to keep the facade unchanged, and even stricter if internal details of a certain age still there. The medieval centre and ramparts a beautiful sight.
Load More Replies...I’ve been there a couple of times (the street not the McDonalds) and very close by is the Mozarteum, Mozart’s birth house and museum. Highly recommend a visit if you’re ever in Salzburg!
the Mozarteum is the University for Arts in Salzburg. but his birth house is just a few meters away of this McDonalds indeed.

If money’s particularly tight, you should strive to be as flexible as you can. For instance, you might want to consider traveling when it’s not peak tourist season and when the flights are cheaper. Then, you might be able to save some additional money if the flight isn’t a direct one.
On top of that, you can opt for couchsurfing or Airbnb-like services instead of fancy hotels. Take the time to do some research beforehand. You’d be surprised how much cash that can save you.

In the US a woman called into a radio station asking why "they" (not the radio station, obvs) had placed a deer crossing sign at such a hazardous location? She wanted the sign moved to someplace where the deer wouldn't be in quite so much danger. Dead silence for a bit. The hosts went back and forth with this moron for A WHILE, trying to explain that the signs were for drivers to be cautious because that's a large deer crossing area. And she kept countering with, "Well, why don't we get the deer to cross somewhere else?" They were finally like, "MAM, deer can't read. Do you understand that? This is their natural crossing site and we are warning drivers to look out for them." It literally took a few more minutes for "light to dawn on marble head". Then she just hung up. The hosts were speechless a few times. This is a totally true story. I don't remember which state it was in, but you can Google it, I'm sure.

Load More Replies...Now, look, the reality is that some people are scared or anxious about traveling or being uncomfortable. They don’t like the uncertainty. They might think they’re too busy with work and everything else. They imagine a dozen scenarios of everything that can go wrong. Or they’ve had very bad experiences in the past that they’d rather forget. In these cases, some long-term exposure therapy can help alleviate at least some of those fears.
This Public Fountain In Nice, France Lets You Fill Your Water Bottle With Flat Or Sparkling Water
Someone I work with calls sparkling water, electric water and that is now what it’s called in our house 😂
In Australia, bottled water is about twice the price of petrol. If you fill a bottle from a tap, you could fill about 10,000 bottles for the price of your bottled water. Just sayin' ...
This worries me. There is a town in Australia where you can fill your water bottle with sparkling water for free. It's delicious fresh but it goes off in two days so can't be stored, even in the fridge, and tends to be high in sulfur.

This Bus Stop Library In Norway

For example, if you’re scared of traveling, for your first trip, you might want to start small. Like, really small. Like, going to a nearby part of town you hardly ever visit. Or even a street near your home you’ve never been to before. You can then expand your travels step by step. Visit the other side of the city. Go to a nearby town that’s just a couple of train stops away.
Then, try going a little further—maybe visit a location that’s an hour away. Visit the seaside. Go to a popular local tourist spot you’ve never been to. Go and experience some nature trails firsthand.

After you become used to the thrill and surprises that these miniature adventures have to offer, continue broadening your scope. Get on a plane for a weekend trip somewhere. Plan for a week-long adventure abroad. Start planning for that month-long trek across your dream destinations. All you really need is some curiosity, a bit of experience, some confidence, and the willingness to do some planning.
However, if you think that you might suffer from an actual fear of travel, known as hodophobia, you might want to seek the help of a therapist or counselor for some guidance.

This McDonald's In Amsterdam Has A Baby Bottle Warming Microwave
You mean they've sacrificed a potential money making product to make parent's lives easier? What witchery is this?
I can remember being told that staff in a restaurant would not do this as they could not be held responsible for over-heating it and causing injury to the child. I wasn't asking them to feed the baby. Surely it was my duty as the parent to ensure the milk was at a suitable temperature? However, I have been given a cup full of very hot water to put the bottle into. How's that any different? In fact, I would say it was more dangerous.
Why more dangerous, just out of curiousity? I would think it heats slower and more evenly in hot water, which makes the temperature easier to control. But yes I completely agree with you.

London Heathrow Airpot Has A Charging Station With Outlets From Around The World
I’m actually curious, why don’t hotels install universal plugs like what you see on certain travel adapters, the ones where all sockets are mashed onto one side? It’s more likely if you’re visiting and need to stay in a hotel that you have different plugs from abroad
That implies that said hotel has 230V power in the rooms (North American hotels definitely would not). Also insurance liability, they don't call those universal sockets deathdapters for nothing, they generally circumvent any of the safety features of the various socket types.

In Australia, This Costs The Patient Nothing. Doesn’t Matter If They Are A Citizen Or A Tourist
This is incorrect. The royal flying doctor service has an eligibility criteria for it to be no cost, and tourists generally won't meet that criteria. If the post is trying to refer to healthcare in Australua being free for all, this is also untrue. Some countries have reciprocal access, but not many, so tourists have to pay for their treatment.
I was in A&E last week and saw the sign about reciprocal medical care, there was about 10 or 15 countries at the most.
Load More Replies...Happy to be corrected by an Aussie if I'm wrong. But my understanding is. As a New Zealander, I can get emergency care in Australia as part of a reciprocal arrangement (Apparently it covers UK residents as well). This doesn't apply to all nationalities, nor all injuries.
Yes, New Zealand are fine for medical care here.

This doesn't apply to Canadians. Canada doesn't have a reciprocal arrangement with Australia.
Speaking as a Canadian: our health care services seem to be under constant misinformation campaigns by foreign insurance providers trying to convince us that we are being under served and that we should embrace private providers.

There were a few towns when I travelled around Tasmania last week that had QR codes on information signs about different landmarks. My phone refuses to scan QR codes, so I didn't experience them myslef, but they are meant to give additional info. My mum tried doing one at Ross bridge, that was meant to show you more detail of the carvings as you panned it across the bridge, but she got confused by it and gave up lol. We went to a museum and got to see up close reproductions of the carvings anyway.

Also in the Netherlands, and as I've seen in several other European countries too. Ranch dressing is not a thing in Europe, it's seen as something typical from the US, hence the name Cool American. I remember the Doritos company tried a ranch dip here in the early 2000's. I actually liked it, but probably not many others, because it was discontinued after a year or two. Now there's only the classic Doritos salsa dip left, which is pretty good too.

I believe that it's part of Chilean policy of not allowing cartoons, or cartoon type figures, to be depicted on unhealthy foods. Basically aimed at reducing childhood obesity.
“In Chile there are two Laws, First, Everything that's unhealthy needs to have "Seals" saying stuff Like "High in Sugar", "High in Fat", etc. Then, there is another law that says that there can't be anything resembling a cartoon or characters on the box/paper of something with Seals. Hotel In Europe Offers A Rent-A-Pet Fish For Single Travelers
Poor fish, shouldn't be in a bowl! According to experts, keeping fish in bowls is wrong for several reasons. Low surface to air ratio, no filters to clean the water and cramped space for the fish are some. Many cities across the world have banned fishbowls altogether. This includes Rome and Monza in Italy, most cities in Sweden and Mexico.
Goldfish should never be in a bowl, it is animal abuse. It's waaaaaaaaay too small for them. They don't get enough space to swim longer distances (which they want to do), there usually isn't enough oxygen in the water for them, and the water can warm up too fast when it's hot outside. Also, they get bored out of their mind (and no, they don't have a short memory, scientists in the 80s already proved they can remember things for at least 3 months).
I had that in a hotel on a business trip once. It's awful. I don't now how many of those poor fish are suffering and dying from the ridiculous small tank they are 'living' in, and the food they get from the customers' mini bar. That was in Upper Austria. (Europe, just in case you read Australia. I am talking about Austria, where Kangaroos and Koalas are only kept in zoos)
Supermarkets In Europe Keep Their Eggs Unrefrigerated
In Europe, It's forbidden to wash the eggs, so their natural protection is enough to keep them safe at room temperature. On the other hand, US style washed eggs are more sensitive to germs.
I believe in the US they have to keep eggs refrigerated because they wash & sanitise them, hence taking off the natural defence barrier that all eggs have.
that's cause we don't wash the eggs before selling them so they keep the protective layer
In the USA they (mostly) scrub of the protective natural layer before retail
Load More Replies...That's because they don't powerwash them, so they still have their protective coating.
It's for this reason that in Europe you usually can eat eggs a little bit over the expiration date. If at home you keep them in the fridge, they last longer as the expiration date is for eggs out of the fridge. It's anyway a sensible thing to do the water of glass proof, just to be sure, if your eggs are expired, and using them to be cooked, and not raw in some cream.
We do in Australia too, though most people put them in the fridge at home. You don't have to, but they last longer if you do.
